Should he be the one investigated in the hostage-taking incident?

A fact -finding committee was created to investigate what happened on that fateful day, the hostage-drama incident. It was the day when eight Hong Kong Nationals perished- that placed the Philippines in a very bad light.

I was listening earlier over the radio while Vice Mayor Isko Moreno was interrogated.

I somehow missed the name of the man interrogating him. What I just noticed was that there was a little arrogance on the part of this man. It was my personal observation.

Listening further, I learned that it was DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo.

It shocked me.

I personally believe that he should be included in the list of those being investigated being the Secretary of the Department of Interior and Local Government? Robredo, who co-chairs the committee should not be exempted. The City of Manila Government and the Philippine National Police are under DILG, which he heads.

How come he is doing the investigation? Just asking?

The people, who should be held accountable need a lot of explaining to do. Explanation that will not just convince our fellow kababayans, but more so, the international communities.

I bet they all have squeaky clean hands for they doing a lot of ”hugas kamay.”

Hong Kong Journalists Association letter to President Aquino

I am re-posting this letter from the Hong Kong Journalists Association to Philippine President Benigno S. Aquino III.

Dear President Aquino,

The Hong Kong Journalists Association expresses its deepest condolences to the families of those who died in Manila’s hostage tragedy. We also want to express our appreciation and respect to those who acted bravely and astutely during the long standoff, thus allowing some of the hostages to survive. We are, however, filled with anger and concern over the blame being heaped on the media for allegedly contributing to the tragedy.

The HKJA notes with concern that President Benigno Aquino of the Philippines made the media the scapegoat when he said: “Media coverage of his brother being taken into custody further agitated the hostage-taker…” Using this flimsy excuse, Mr. Aquino said he would consider imposing new restrictions on media coverage should a similar crisis occur.

We have no idea what further restrictions are under consideration but what we are sure of is that President Benigno Aquino’s words were uttered hastily and without careful consideration. Without a thorough investigation such conclusions cannot be taken seriously and the HKJA views the president’s hasty conclusions with grave misgivings.

The role of the media is to tell the world what is happening and what has happened. This is the essence of what the democratic world has come to know and to accept as freedom of the press and freedom of expression. The media’s presence is vital to the preservation of human rights of minorities in any conflict. As in the case of Manila’s killings, nobody can tell if the same tragedy would not have taken place without the presence of the media. What we can be sure of is that without the presence of the media no knowledge of this horrific tragedy would have been known to the outside world.

Moreover, the police force of the Philippines should have known that negotiations were going on between the gunman and his brother, and that this was being telecast. The act of arresting the brother would, clearly, irritate the gunman. Yet the police forcibly wrestled the brother down and handcuffed him, all directly in front of the media.

The police, clearly, had neither strategy nor the necessary know-how to deal with such a situation. With the development of the new media, it is unrealistic to ask the media not to broadcast live in a matter of huge public interest not only to the Filipinos themselves, but also to people in Hong Kong and elsewhere. Proper media arrangements, including a safe area for the media at the scene, in accordance with internationally accepted standards, are of paramount importance. None were forthcoming.

The Hong Kong Journalists Association calls on the Philippines government to refrain from using this incident to introduce harsh measures against the media in order to cover up their incompetence. We will closely monitor the incident and any further deterioration of press freedom in Philippines arising from this tragedy.

What does SWAT really mean?

We all know that SWAT means Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT).

But right after the Manila hostage drama, SWAT jokes begin to circulate.

Among the many new meanings they had given to SWAT, what I found to be the funniest is “SANA WAG AKONG TAMAAN (SWAT).”

Right in front of our very eyes, the drama unfolded. But this drama is not your usual drama – it was real-life drama, the hostage taking drama that happened in front of the famous Quirino Grandstand.

Hongkong Nationals were held captive by a lone disgruntled policeman, hostage-taking cop, Rolando Mendoza. He was dismissed from service two years before his retirement. Unfortunately, he also lost his retirement benefit because of an extortion case filed against him.

Below’s letter is in connection with the case filed against Mendoza last 2008

THANKS FOR THE E MAIL. I’D LIKE TO TELL YOU MY SON’S EXPERIENCE WITH THE MANILA POLICE LAST WEDNESDAY EVENING AT ABOUT 10PM.

CHRISTIAN WENT TO THE CONDO AT THE CORNER OF VITO CRUZ AND TAFT AVE. TO RETURN HIS COUSIN’S LAPTOP. HE HANDED THE LAPTOP TO HIS COUSIN AND WENT BACK TO THE CAR. WHEN HE GOT TO THE CAR, THERE WAS A COP WHO ASKED HIM WHAT HE WAS DOING THERE; WHY HE WAS PARKED ON A NO PARKING AREA. CHRISTIAN SAID, IF IT WERE A NO PARKING AREA WHY IS IT THAT THERE ARE A LOT OF CARS PARKED.

THE COP TOLD HIM TO OPEN HIS TRUNK AND CHRIS ASKED, WHY? DO YOU HAVE A WARRANT? ANYWAY, THE CAR DOORS AND WINDOWS WERE OPEN AND ANOTHER COP SEARCHED THE INTERIOR WHILE ANOTHER OPENED THE TRUNK.

IN THE TOOLBOX THEY FOUND THE PLASTIC END OF SPARK PLUGS. THE COP SAID IT WAS A PARAPHARNALIA. THE SAME COP BROUGHT TO THE TRUNK USED PLASTIC SACHETS OF SHABU AND STARTED TO SHOUT ‘DRUGS ‘TO!’, ‘DRUGS!’

SO THEY TOOK CHRISTIAN, TO THE ATM OF BPI. THEY SAW HIS CARD AND ASKED HIM TO WITHDRAW ALL HIS MONEY. FORTUNATELY HE DOES NOT KEEP HIS MONEY THERE. ONLY HIS SALARY IS DEPOSITED THERE. SO THE COPS WE INSISTED THAT HE WAS A DRUG USER. AND MY SON WAS SAYING DO A TEST NOW SO THEY’LL SEE IF HE’S POSITIVE. HE SAID I CAN’T WORK IN MANDARIN AS A CHEF IF I’M A DRUG USER. HE SAID HE HAD TO GET POLICE, NBI, BARANGAY, COURT AND MEDICAL CLEARANCE BEFORE HE COULD START WORKING.

THEN THE POLICE TOOK HIM TO POLICE HEAD-QUARTERS AT UN AVE. AND THERE FORCED HIM TO EAT SHABU. IT TOOK A WHILE BEFORE HE ATE IT. SIX COPS WERE PUNCHING HIM AND SCARING HIM WITH THEIR GUNS UNTIL THE POOR GUY PEED IN HIS PANTS OUT OF FEAR. HE HAD TO SWALLOW THE DRUG. THEN THE COPS STARTED TO LAUGH. NOW WE’LL SEE IF YOU ARE NEGATIVE OF SHABU. ’200,000PHP AND WE’LL LET YOU GO OR THIS WILL BE AT THE FISCALS OFFICE IN THE MORNING. CALL YOUR FRIENDS AND PARENTS.

THIS ORDEAL STARTED AT 10PM. HE WAS ABLE TO CALL ME AT 5AM THE FOLLOWING DAY. POOR SON OF MINE WAS REALLY TRAUMATIZED. A FRIEND OF HIS CAME WITH TWENTY THOUSAND THE COPS GRABBED IT AND LET HIM GO AS IF NOTHING HAPPENED.

I WAS IN LIPA ALL THE TIME THIS WAS HAPPENING. CHRIS LATER FOUND OUT FROM HIS COUSIN THAT SEVEN OF HER FRIENDS WERE ALSO APPREHENDED BY THE SAME GROUP OF COPS AND ALSO TOOK THEM TO THEIR ATM’S. THEY GOT ALL THEIR MONEY IN THE ACCOUNT. THIS COP IS CAPT.MENDOZA OF THE MOBIL GROUP AND SARGENT GAVINO. IF YOU GUYS KNOW INFLUENTIAL PEOPLE IN THE SERVICE, PLEASE LET THEM KNOW ABOUT THIS. I WOULD ALSO LIKE FOR THEM TO RETURN THE MONEY THEY TOOK FROM MY SON SO HE COULD GIVE IT BACK TO HIS FRIEND.

THE MORE PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT THIS SO CALLED POLICE OFFICERS THE BETTER. THIS IS THE TYPE OF GOVERNMENT THAT WE HAVE NOW. DISARM THE POPULATION AND THIS TYPE OF ABUSE HAPPENS. THANKS AND PASS IT ON. BOB

What transpired next was not like any movie we see. It was real. It cannot be edited, for there will be no take two.

Any hostage taker will always be in a do or die situation. Anything he hears or sees that will ignite more anger and will cause more scar to his wounded spirit is something that should have been thought of seriously by the police handling the siege.

But as we all witnessed, it was not properly handled. It took them longer to rescue the hostages. The Philippine Police obviously lacked training in handling crisis such as this one.

What was even worst was that immediately after the police took Mendoza’s brother, a series of gunfire ensued .

What was originally meant to be a fruitful trip of the Hongkong Nationals to our country turned out to be bloody homecoming. This is what happened on that fateful day as eight HK Nationals perished.

While we are still trying to rebuild the image of the country to the whole world, this is what happened. Now, the world sees the Philippines as a country where one’s security is at risk.. Our beloved country is now on the front page of international newspapers, with our image being tarnished by what happened.

The Hong Kong government has recently issued a travel ban to the Philippines. It is sad, but I do understand their sentiments.

I could not bare imagine the psychological stress that have caused the hostages, seeing someone executed right in front of their very eyes, much more if it were their loved ones.

Some people can only deal with a 15-minute stress. But in this case, it was more than ten (10) hours and they could have psychological difficulties for as long as ten years and this could have permanent effect on the hostages.

I hope that the world will not look at all Filipinos despicable and notorious people.

I would just like to echo what 15-year-old student of Samar National High School, Reigno Jose Dilao, posted on his letter to CNN iReport ,

“We are not all Like Mendoza.”

Why I prefer body wash over soap?

Ever since, I always use soap on my body when taking a bath. I prefer a squeaky clean feeling that soap gives. I never really liked the sticky feeling that body washes give.

But all that has changed now. Why?

A few weeks ago, while I was taking a bath, I was already done shampooing and applying conditioner to my hair and while I was about to grab the soap to do my own thing, I noticed a horrible site. Yuuuucccksss!!!

There were strands of hair stuck on the soap bar – all kinds of hairs which you can find in your body , gross that is!!!!!

Will you even dare touch it? I wouldn’t.

Since then, I decided to switch to body wash – 360-degree turn.

I tell you, after that horrific site, body wash is in for me. Body wash is a whole lot more hygienic than soap.

To all soap users, including whoever used ours, please get all those unwanted hair after using the soap okay!!!

Are we prepared in times of calamities?

September 2009, I felt a strong breeze touching my skin. I uttered to myself, “please don’t come.” This was the time when typhoon Ondoy wreaked havoc to our country. My plea had fallen on deaf ears.

As early as ten in the morning, water already started rushing in. The current was so strong, unfathomable. A few minutes of rain had caused flooding in the major parts of Manila and we were not spared at all. Ondoy was indeed horrifying.

I called it The Day That Was:

Just recently, typhoon Basyang hit Metro Manila. The wind was so strong and it felt like our roof was going to be extracted from our house.

Little knowledge was dangerous and that is why we always relay on PAG-ASA for more information on the coming typhoon. Unfortunately, what we got was not enough to keep us prepared for the worst.

After Basyang, there was another tropical depression that came in. Probably because it was high tide that was why it caused flooding at least in our area.

The recent typhoons that hit the Philippines had caused major lives. Are we really prepared in calamities like this? What are the precautionary measures that we must do in order counter attack the effects of dreaded typhoons?

Just recently, the neighborhood cleaned the drainage and thanks to the association that initiated this cleaning drive.

In our house, we did some cleaning ourselves. I threw away all the unnecessary papers that I had collected over the years, papers that are immaterial to date. We installed the furniture on a higher wall, a level that is impossible to be reached by flood, I hope .

We need to be really prepared in times like this.

The following day, I headed off to the post office and claimed my T-shirt. A note on the envelope from Dhemz says “thanks for joining.” Now, I would like to say, thank you. President Cory Aquino’s First Death Anniversary

Today marks the first death anniversary of Former President Corazon Aquino. She died battling colon cancer for more than a year.

Who would have thought that a year later, we will have her only son, Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino, III as the 15th President of the Republic of The Philippines?

I remembered that it was still very early in the morning of 01 August 2009, I was still sleeping at my sister’s house that I got a text from her informing me of President Cory’s demise. Jumped off the bed, I immediately turned on the TV and I saw then Senator Noynoy Aquino making a statement about his mother’s passing away.

Yesterday, we got our new telephone directory bearing the picture of the late Former President Cory Aquino.
